Marcia Griffin grew up hearing her father say those words. They followed her from New Orleans to classrooms in Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda, where she was often the only Black child in the room. They were with her when she talked her way into a full MBA scholarship, and when partners’ doors at first slammed in the face of her nonprofit, as she sought to open access to homeownership for families of color.
Marcia never considered herself exceptional, just someone who wouldn’t take no for an answer. Then, one comment at an industry dinner changed everything.
Marcia Griffin is an entrepreneur, speaker, and nonprofit founder who knows that extraordinary impact starts with a decision. As Founder and CEO of HomeFree-USA, she turned a single belief—that every family deserves an equitable path to ownership and wealth—into one of America’s most respected homeownership organizations.
Relationships have always been at the heart of her work. By building strong alliances with lenders, housing agencies, universities, and community organizations, Marcia has grown HomeFree-USA’s affiliate network to 50+ agencies across 25 states, guiding more than 35,000 households each year. A 0% foreclosure rate means that, for the last 30+ years, no family that has followed HomeFree-USA’s model has lost their home.
Believing that financial confidence opens doors long before a mortgage does, Marcia launched the Center for Financial Advancement® in 2017. Across 15 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, CFA has served more than 10,000 students, strengthening financial literacy, cultivating leadership, and creating career pathways with leading corporate partners. In 2022, she brought her message to a wider audience as host of $mart Money Moves: Building Wealth for Everyday People.
Today, Marcia shares the lessons behind that impact with women’s organizations, professional associations, and industry audiences alike, showing them how to find their purpose, cultivate the right partnerships, and persist until doors open. Her journey is proof that anyone willing to choose it can make an extraordinary difference.

Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award
The U.S. President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor in the President’s Volunteer Service Award program, recognizes a lifetime of outstanding service and volunteerism. Awarded by the Office of the President, Points of Light, and AmeriCorps, Marcia was selected unanimously by the awarding committee for decades of opening doors to homeownership and financial opportunity for families nationwide.
